Geneva Police yesterday arrested 57-year old Melvin Francis Lackey of Geneva.  A search warrant was  executed at his home in the Town of Geneva by members of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and the Geneva Police Department.  He was taken into custody without incident. Lackey was charged with Placing a False Bomb, a Class D Felony.

On Monday police say Lackey sent the packages from the Geneva Post Office to the Public Safety Building.

The Monroe County Bomb Squad determined that the explosive device was an inert grenade, which was not capable of producing an explosion. Further investigation revealed that there were no dangerous material within the two packages. One of the packages contained several bottles filled with liquid and a pineapple-style grenade.

A hand grenade was discovered yesterday at the Geneva Public Safety Building.

Two suspicious packages were mailed to Geneva City Court.  The grenade was discovered when the packages were scanned by an x-ray machine.

Police say the building and area businesses were evacuated. The packages were destroyed by bomb experts.

One person has been arrested, but police have not released any other information.

Geneva Police were assisted by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Rochester Police Department, New York State Police , Canandaigua Police, U.S. Postal Inspection Services and the A.T.F.

Update: We we’re able to move closer to the scene. Geneva PSB still roped off. A few officers standing outside the building looking at something on the ground. Still no new details. @news10nbc pic.twitter.com/wo4dbNolZt

Tape around PSB is slowly coming down— we’re all closer to facility. From our TV report: just after 4 we heard a big “boom” and before that we think “fire in the hole” from the bomb squad. Still waiting on official details. pic.twitter.com/iaaFDxn5w8
