A new reservation service for American Airlines passengers flying out of Miami International Airport now expands the length of time for them to schedule their TSA checkpoint screening.

Known as MIA Reserve, this free service was developed through a six-month pilot program with American Airlines and three tech-related companies; it started on September 15, 2022. They are Pangiam, a security technology firm; Copenhagen Optimization, a software and consultancy company; and CLEAR, which is known for their biometric travel document system at major U.S. airports and stadiums.

“We are excited to partner with American Airlines and Pangiam on this six-month pilot program for MIA Reserve, which could pave the way for even shorter checkpoint wait times at MIA,” said Ralph Cutié, director and CEO of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, in a media release.

MIA Reserve was developed in partnership between American Airlines and three tech companies, ... [+] Pangiam, Copenhagen Optimization and CLEAR.

Reserved screening times through MIA Reserve are available daily to American Airlines passengers only at MIA’s TSA Checkpoint 4. It can now be done from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Reservations, which are limited, can be scheduled up to 72 hours before a flight. They can be made by signing up at MIA Reserve.

Here is how it works. Upon reaching the webpage’s home screen, passengers select American Airlines as their airline and enter their destination, flight number, full name, number of people in their party and contact information to reserve their spot.

After doing that, they'll receive a QR code by email to use when they arrive at they scheduled MIA Reserve time.

Once at MIA, after checking bags or completing any additional check-ins before their appointment time, they then go to Checkpoint 4, near Door 7. Then, they have to show their MIA Reserve QR code to the checkpoint staff so the staff can direct them to their lane.

Appointments are available up to 60 minutes before domestic flights and up to 90 minutes before international flights. Passengers should reserve their spot early to secure their preferred time.

If a traveler didn’t pre-schedule an MIA Reserve time before arriving at the airport, they can still make a reservation by using their smartphone to scan the QR code on the MIA Reserve signs at Checkpoint 4 and then setting up an appointment.

MIA Reserve customers will be given a grace period of 10 minutes per appointment customers to arrive at the queue line any time within that window after their scheduled appointment time. Anyone arriving past that time has to then enter through the regular queue lanes.

Passengers traveling with a group may book on behalf of the other passengers in their traveling party by specifying its total size during the reservation process. The maximum group size eligible to enter under one appointment is 10 passengers.

“As MIA continues to set new records in passenger traffic, I’m proud to see that we are also exploring new ways to streamline the airport experience for our visitors,” stated Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, also in the same media release. “MIA Reserve has the potential to help many of our travelers get through the security checkpoint faster than ever before.”

MIA Reserve is only available to general screening passengers to help provide a better screening experience for those without a trusted traveler program. All TSA PreCheck passengers flying American Airlines will continue to be screened at MIA’s TSA Checkpoint 1 to receive their PreCheck benefits, such as not having to remove their shoes and electronics.

Miami International Airport is also schedule to welcome in another tech-focused boarding advancement. Beginning in October 2022, MIA will launch the first phase of biometric boarding at its passenger gates, which will allow travelers to board international flights with just the touchless click of a camera.
