Two new Hi-Scan 10080 XCT X-ray scanners from Smiths Detection have been installed at London Southend Airport (SEN).

The new machine can generate high-resolution 3D images. Each machine can process up to 1,800 bags per hour. Once placed on the conveyor belt during check-in, the passenger’s luggage will move along the 300m conveyor belt and pass the security check before being placed on the plane. Robson signed a contract to supply the conveyor system, and the local company completed the installation. The announcement was issued along with a new test channel within the airport’s security area, which allows passengers to leave liquids and laptops in their boarding luggage.

Glyn Jones, Chief Executive Officer of London Southend Airport, said: "The new tote bag system will ensure efficiency in transporting passenger luggage to the flight, while maximizing safety through new X-ray inspection technology."

Smiths Detection Aviation Global Director Richard Thompson added: “These detection systems will provide improvements in operational efficiency and passenger experience behind the scenes, all of which will be invaluable with the rise of air travel and many years to come.”

The airport has released a video of the new checked baggage system, which can be found here.

After installation, SEN was awarded the "Outstanding" status following a recent quality assurance framework audit conducted by the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA). The basis of the quality assurance framework is to support teachers and training providers to achieve and maintain a good training quality baseline, and to carry out their own internal quality assurance. This framework is mandatory for training providers registered with CAA and consists of two steps-a self-assessment phase and an external assurance visit.

Jones added: “We are excited about the results, reaching'outstanding' is almost unheard of and praised the team’s hard work. From airport training strategy to document control and facilities, every area has achieved excellence.”
