Next time you are at the airport, your luggage may be scanned by local technology. The field of Indian X-ray baggage scanners is dominated by Chinese suppliers, but the government’s recent move has opened the door for Indian suppliers. Vehant Technologies, headquartered in Noida, is such a local participant. "The ban on Chinese suppliers will help India achieve self-reliance in the technology industry.

It is in line with the Prime Minister’s recent "Atma Nirbhar Bharat" call. Due to Covid, the market has been falling in recent months, so it is unlikely to compare sales (with 2019 data), but this ban still helps a lot. We have recently received two major orders from Kolkata Metro and Punjab Prison. If there are Chinese suppliers there, it will be difficult," Kapil Bardeja, co-founder and CEO of X-ray luggage scanner manufacturer Vehant Technologies Said. It is also one of the first companies to develop machines locally. Currently, it produces 500-600 X-ray baggage scanners each year, including dual-view scanners.

Currently, the X-ray baggage scanner market is flooded with American and European players, such as Smiths Detection, Rapiscan, 3D Xray, Astrophysics. Nevertheless, Indian players such as Evolve, Krystan Vision, Siddhalakshmi and others have accelerated their pace. Bardeja added: “In X-ray scanners, we still import 20-25% of the components, but it comes from non-Chinese suppliers. Earlier we had some Chinese suppliers, but after the May 2020 guidelines , We switched to Western suppliers, which added some costs."

The local manufacture of X-ray baggage scanners is fairly new. Chinese manufacturers can produce 5,000 scanners a year, while Indian manufacturers can only produce 500.

"We are very optimistic about the government's support and should continue to support it. Either ban Chinese players or provide a level playing field. We believe that Indian companies also need some kind of obligation protection to compete with global companies. In my opinion, 20% is levied on foreign companies. “The tariffs are good for Indian manufacturers to compete,” he said. “We have added X-ray baggage scanners to our product portfolio, and have occupied 25% of the market share in the past two years. We have also successfully sold to To the airport."
