Through this order with Analogic, TSA aims to improve security inspections at US airports.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has placed an order with Analogic, a security technology solution provider, to deliver a medium-sized computed tomography (CT) X-ray system.
The total value of orders for the system to be deployed at TSA checkpoints at US airports is approximately US$198 million.
TSA Administrator David Pekoske said: "This award is another important step in enhancing aviation safety.
“It provides our dedicated frontline personnel with one of the best tools that can be used to inspect passengers’ carry-on items and improves the passenger experience by allowing passengers to put more items in their carry-on luggage during the inspection process.”
The contract aims to purchase more than 300 medium-sized CT X-ray devices.
The installation of these systems at airport checkpoints is expected to begin in early 2022.
By applying sophisticated algorithms, CT scanners create 3D images that are used to detect explosives while scanning passenger luggage.
TSA officials can view and rotate 3D images on three axes to inspect and identify any threat objects that may be present in a piece of luggage.
In addition, these systems can be sized to fit the checkpoint environment.
In July, TSA allowed three airports to sign security agreements with Amazon's subsidiary Amazon Air.
This approval enables Amazon to perform security functions and assist in its plans to recruit at the airport.
The airports approved to sign an exclusive area agreement (EAA) with Amazon Airlines are Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) and Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD).
