A train carrying hazardous cargo derailed Monday evening in Fall River, leaking diesel fuel as a result.

According to Fall River Police Capt. Barden Castro, Monday evening at about 7:29 p.m., police received a call about a derailed train in the area of North Main Street and Clark Street. The freight train was said to be carrying hazardous cargo, with scanner reports indicating it was potassium chloride.

Castro said investigation revealed the train was traveling south when it was involved in a low-speed collision with a tree that had fallen onto the tracks, causing the train to derail. As a result, the train’s diesel fuel tank was punctured and began to leak.

According to Castro, an environmental clean-up company was contacted to clean up the scene and that the first priority will be to empty the approximately 18,000 gallons of diesel from the fuel tank before attempting to get the train back on the tracks. The train belongs to Mass Coastal Railroad.

Castro noted that no injuries were reported and that the train’s cargo remained intact. He said there was no danger to the public.
