Smiths Detection has been selected by Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) to deploy its high-speed explosive detection system (EDS) HI-SCAN 10080 XCT at Incheon International Airport (ICN) Terminal 2 as part of its phase 4 expansion project . The contract includes an equipment service agreement.

The expansion is expected to increase the capacity of the ICN, add 29 million passengers and create 60,000 new jobs. This will make Incheon International Airport the third largest airport in the world.

The checked baggage inspection system HI-SCAN 10080 XCT has a dual-view dual-energy X-ray line scanner with full 3D volume computed tomography (CT) imaging and reconstruction functions. The system has a throughput of up to 1,800 bags per hour. HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is deployed in major airports such as Heathrow Airport and Frankfurt Airport, and has passed ECAC EDS Standard 3 and 3.1 approval and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) certification.

The installation is expected to be completed in October 2024. IIAC is also keen to explore the iCMORE function using Smiths Detection, using artificial intelligence algorithms and advanced material recognition to automatically detect the ever-expanding list of dangerous goods and lithium batteries.
