Between now and December 6, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is collecting feedback and opinions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition.

The Department of Homeland Security has used and piloted artificial intelligence technology in multiple functions including customs and border protection, transportation security, and investigations. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security launched a new scanning imaging technology for footwear, which will be deployed at TSA security checkpoints to increase the efficiency of airport security checks and may eliminate the need to take off shoes and coats when passing through checkpoints.

However, artificial intelligence and facial recognition have brought public controversy, such as prejudice, security and privacy issues.

"Understanding how the public views these technologies, and then designing and deploying them in a way that responds to public attention is critical to obtaining public support for DHS's use of these technologies," said the information collection request published in the Federal Register.

The agency plans to use feedback to better design and deploy related hardware and software, and to improve the marketing of tools. The Department of Homeland Security is particularly interested in feedback addressing the following issues:
